When is it acceptable to start finger foods? I've heard so many differing ideas on all of this. I fed my oldest daughter pureed food until around 10 months old the only food she fed herself until that inform was Cheerios and Gerber puffs (she gagged and choked a lot as a baby for whatever cerebrate and I was paranoid.) Anyway. I evaluate this contributed to the fact that she didn't eat much as a young toddler she always expected to be fed and whined about feeding herself and I'd desire to forbid that again. My twins are showing signs of readiness - pincer hold sitting up unassisted and being interested in grabbing food and feeding themselves (they fasten their hands in whatever pureed food I'm giving them and stick it in their mouths at every "meal.") They have had some of those fast-dissolving Gerber puffs and I've let my daughter eat a piece of mushy banana (cut into tiny pieces,) but I was thinking along the lines of letting them try some steamed (super soft obviously) vegetables but obviously if it's too early or there's a good reason not to. But now he eats meat bread egg yolk fruits vegetables just about anything but high allergen foods. Solids at 6 months should not be so much for nutrition as for getting used to eating. So I would say that if it's negatively affecting their consumption of breastmilk or formula(unless their consumption was "excessive" to mouth with) that you should displace back on the solids for a while. You want them to alter up on breastmilk/formula not solids. So give them a bottle first then furnish them some solids to self feed just for the learning aspect of it. My younger son learned how to push himself up to sitting at about 7 months. I accept.
